Gourmet Tupelo Honey

tupelo honeyThe small region in the panhandle of Florida where the Apalachicola and Chipola Rivers converge is home to nearly all the Tupelo Honey Production in the United States. Gourmet Tupelo Honey is one of the most sought after honeys on the market. The taste is superb and responsible for the consumer rush each year to get a taste of this culinary delight before supplies run out for the year. There was a 1997 movie, starring Peter Fonda, that shed light on tupelo honey and made the premier honey even more sought after.

Each year a select few beekeepers place their bees on docks, platforms and bee stands above the river’s high-water mark to collect the sweetest honey nectar known to man. So sweet is this nectar that it may take years to crystallize, where other honeys may “sugar” within a few months of harvest. The operation to collect tupelo honey has a degree of difficulty of “10″ to harvest compared to other honey that is collected in an orchard or apiary. Collecting sixty pound honey supers (boxes) from a stand then into a boat can be dangerous and very costly. Tupelo honey is one of the most costly honeys to harvest.

This gourmet honey is medium amber in color and has a floral smell and if you can imagine, it has a floral finish when tasted. So unique is the taste that you will soon become one of those connoisseurs that patiently wait for the beekeepers to announce that the “new crop of tupelo honey is ready for sale!”
